Making sense of numbers

BBC News Magazine is running a series by Michael Blastland on making sense of numbers: interpreting data, research, media coverage.

Surveys & media coverage

Myth of counting: the economy, growth, recession

Michael Blastland is the author, with Andrew Dilnot, of The Tiger That Isn’t: Seeing Through a World of Numbers

Of interest here for several reasons.

Media coverage of research.

Publicly funded data, interpretation & representation.

Publishing and marketing strategy.

If you read the BBC magazine articles you might well look up the book on, say, Amazon. Where Amazon’s  ‘Search inside’ feature allows you to read an extract, without risking copyright infringement.

You are more likely to purchase, because the authors gave something away. Amazon is more likely to get your order than another online retailer, because they invested in technology to help you make an informed decision.
